Can I pay and attend only one class?
If you want to earn a certificate, it's best to follow the sequence of classes over the course of freshman and sophomore years. Each class is based on the previous one, so removing it from its order would not be fruitful. Those who simply wish to take one or two courses to enrich their life of faith are invited to register as a “listener”, in which case they do not need to do the assignments or attend all the classes. Please note that only students who register for credit hours qualify for a scholarship.
Who is this program primarily for?
The Basic Certificate is designed primarily for lay ministers (volunteer or paid) who do not have formal theological training (at the bachelor's or master's level).
How can I pay?
We accept checks or money orders, payable to the Archdiocese of Portland. Send them to Archdiocese of Portland (ATTN: Rolando Moreno) 2838 E. Burnside St., Portland, Oregon 97214. Credit card payments are not accepted at this time.
What is the deadline to pay?
The deadline is August 28, 2021.
What to do if the parish is the one paying?
Payments from parishes are welcome, but please note that it is the responsibility of the student to bring the invoice to their parish office. We do not issue separate invoices for parishes.
Information about the books and their cost?
Information about the books can be found HERE .
It is the student's responsibility to purchase textbooks. All classes require the Catechism, the Bible, and the Vatican II documents. Apart from those three reference books, the cost of the books for each class will be kept under $40.
What time does school start?
Each day begins in the church with a mass at 8 am. Sessions start at 9am and end at 4pm.
Information about class materials?
The materials will be prepared by the Institute and distributed in class.
Is lunch included?
With the exception of the retreat lunch in May, nothing else is included, so please remember to bring your lunch. There are also restaurants near the area.
What if I can't attend a class?
We understand that plans can be unexpectedly interrupted, causing you to miss a class. In such a case, it will be the student's responsibility to contact the instructor and do what is necessary to catch up.
Are there returns?
If you cancel your registration before the first class, you have the option of a full refund.
Are there scholarships?
Yes, we have limited funds for partial scholarships based on financial need. Please contact our office to request information about them and payment plans.
